Walnutwood High School (WHS) was established in 1980 and opened at the former campus (our current location) of Walnutwood Elementary School in 1989 which is now called the Community Education Center (CEC.) We are a school of choice, which the student and family choose to attend, that follows independent study guidelines. Walnutwood High School is one option that Folsom Cordova offers in order to meet the needs of its students. We offer educational options for our students. Available alternative programs are:
Independent Study
Students meet weekly with their instructor either in-person or virtually. Nineth graders meet twice a week for ninety minutes, and 10th - 12th grade meet with their instructor one day for fity-five minutes weekly. Students receive one week worth of assignments per class to complete by the student’s appointment the following week.
Many different kinds of students attend Walnutwood. Those who excel academically, or are taking college courses, students who have jobs, students with children, students with artistic pursuits, students with emotional or health-related issues, or students who for some other reason are seeking an alternative educational environment. Many have found that Walnutwood has been fine preparation for college and life.
* Walnutwood is not an NCAA approved school site at this time.
Adolescent Parent Program (APP)
Available at an alternative high school setting for pregnant students or students who are parents. Childcare is provided in this program. Contact your counselor for information.
High School Concurrent Enrollment
Concurrent enrollment is offered to Walnutwood High School high school students and allows students to take courses at Walnutwood High School and their school of residence. There are guidelines for students who are concurrently enrolled at two schools.
High School Dual Enrollment
Dual enrollment is offered to Walnutwood students. This is a unique opportunity to earn college credit while enrolled in high school. There are two types of dual enrollment Off Campus Dual Enrollment and On Campus Dual Enrollment
Home/Hospital Teaching (HHI)
This program is available for students who are ill and confined to home or hospital for a minimum of six weeks. Forms must be completed by the physician and parent/guardian. For more informtion about HHI visit
Eighteen Year-Old Students
Students who are 18 and have maintained continuous enrollment may remain at Walnutwood High School if they maintain regular attendance, appropriate behavior, and academic success. Failure to meet attendance, behavior, and/or academic guidelines will result in being referred to Adult Education to complete graduation requirements or to pass the high school equivalency exams.
