Walnutwood High School (WHS) is an independent study program designed for students seeking an alternative to the traditional classroom setting while working toward earning a high school diploma. WHS is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and provides students with a high-quality educational experience through state-adopted curriculum, supported by credentialed teachers who offer guidance, supervision, and academic support.
Students enrolled in Walnutwood High School work independently under a written Independent Study Agreement (ISA) and meet regularly with their supervising teacher. While students follow district-adopted curriculum and graduation requirements, the program offers flexibility to accommodate individual learning needs, interests, schedules, and learning styles.
Success in independent study requires a high level of personal responsibility, self-motivation, and time management. Students are expected to maintain a consistent study schedule of approximately 20–25 hours per week, complete assignments on time, and actively communicate with their teacher.
Independent study is not a self-paced or less demanding alternative to traditional school. Students who are most successful in the program demonstrate strong study habits, a solid work ethic, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to meeting academic expectations without daily classroom supervision.
At Walnutwood High School, students develop the discipline, accountability, and self-direction necessary to become confident, independent learners while earning their high school diploma.
