Independent Study at Walnutwood

 Traditional Independent Study

Walnutwood offers a Traditional Independent Study program for students seeking a structured, flexible alternative to the classroom setting. This program includes:

  • Weekly Academic Meetings: Students are assigned a credentialed teacher (academic advisor) and meet in person once per week for a 45-minute session on a consistent day and time. At each meeting, students receive a full week’s worth of assignments to complete before the next session.
  • Curriculum Options: Students use either FCUSD-approved textbooks or APEX, an online district-approved curriculum.
  • Flexible Pacing: Coursework is divided into weekly modules rather than semesters. For example, English 1A and English 1B each span 8 weeks, comprising a 16-week semester. Since students work at their own pace, the time needed to complete a subject may vary depending on individual progress and mastery of academic standards.
  • Support Services: In addition to weekly teacher meetings, students may be assigned to additional direct instructional classes to support their mastery in math, English development, or Study Skills.  They also have access to additional support classes, such as Math Lab or Science Lab.
