Traditional Independent Study
For students that wish to engage in a traditional independent study that includes meeting with an assigned academic advisor (teacher) a minimum of once each week, Walnutwood provides a traditional Independent Study program. In addition to the weekly meeting with their teacher students will attend subject specific enrichment seminars.
Students participate in both online and traditional independent study courses. This category includes full time Virtual Students who may find certain classes where direct face-to-face interaction with a teacher proves valuable. Our traditional independent study students are also eligible to participate in our online learning program.
- Students will use either the FCUSD textbook courses or APEX (an online district approved curriculum) and meet with their teacher in-person once a week on the same day/time every week for 45 minutes. At the end of each appointment, student is given a full week of work to complete by the following appointment.
- Pure online students will also use either FCUSD textbook courses or APEX but use Microsoft Teams meet with their teacher for 45 minutes on the same day/time once a week. No in-person teacher contact with this option. At the end of each appointment, student is given a full week of work to complete by the following appointment.
- Our curriculum is divided into weeks as opposed to semesters. For example, English 1A is 8-weeks and English 1B is 8-weeks. There are 16-weeks in a semester. Competency of academic standards and weekly progress is different for every student so students may need more or less time to complete a subject.
